Homage to Ahslee Simpson
Realizing that I'm not cool this week wasn't a shock. However having a 10 year old view me with incredulity at my choice of attire when we went out snowboarding was. I had never had someone say to me 'are you seriously going to wear that.' Ever in my life!
I joked with her saying I would pretend I didn't know her if it bothered her that much. Little wretch. This pink princess whose penchant for feathers and the Olsen twins condescending to not only me but her fashionista 13 year old sister as well. It was funny to hear her grumble in the back seat after being thoroughly chastised by her two older sisters. Poor kid. She has the middle child syndrome.
SO as I take these three girls to go snowboarding on Good Friday I listened in horrified fascination, to Ashee Simpson's freshman debute album and three girls ( who I may add take voice lessons) sing tunelessly along. The ironies abounded as I listened to one of the diva's talk about how she wants to be a singer. Later on the hill I was trying to coach a throughly embarrassed 10 year old down the hill on her snowboard. She was pissed cause she kept falling around me. All three girls are highly competive tennis players and to be bested in another sport wasn't any fun for one of them. I made a good call when I asked her if she would prefer to eat junk food and just hang out in the chalet for awhile. French fries are a good cure for a preteen bad mood.
For all of my smug elitest feelings at the time I had been humbled constantly all week. Any preconcieved notions of me pouring out love into these little moldable vessels had been quelched. I realized that children are takers and that's just their nature. And any doubt I had about original sin not being true were destroyed by a certain two year old. This week's favourite words where shut-up and stupid. But I think I maybe making progress. He told me bed time stories one night instead of me and didn't scream at me saying I was a mean girl when I tucked him in. Small victories but reassuring non the less. I must say I'm looking foward to the start of camp. To be with peers and kids who can go to the bathroom unaccompanied will be a real treat.
