Post Punk Spins in Grave

Never, Ever listen to post-punk with your parents. It's a bad bad bad idea. Especially when it's post punk all female groups.
I like listening to a certain radio program called the 'the history of new rock' hosted by Alan Cross on the Edge. Tonight regaled us with the histories behind groups like the Raincoats, The Shags, The Slits, The Curse, Joan Jet before she got famous, The Go Go's and The Bangles when they were still punk before the crazy walking like an egyptian and top 40 scariness.
The thing is that punk isn't necessarily about sounding great. It was about getting a message out or challenging societal norms. Kinda like Green Day on crystal meth and tone deaf. (ie. they never got famous...)The unfortunate thing is that these all female groups didn't consider it a prority to know how to play their intstruments. They were apart of a scene where they wanted to get in on the act. The common theme was these woman hung out with punk and rock god's and had the connections to start their own movement.
Most people weren't aware of these underground movements that eventually did inspire other artists. For example Kurt Cobain could never shut up about the Raincoats. Probably the only all female group that I don't mind listening to with out having to drink copious amounts. ( of kool-aid people jeez. It's the sugar.)
What it comes down to I suppose is that musical taste is entirely subjective. Sure punk in the beginning wasn't easy to stomach but it had an intent, and it paved the way for a group like The Clash. Or for example the Raincoats helping to form Nirvana, or the Pixies who influenced a whole new generation of rock, and the list could go on with many different genres.
I suppose my hope is that another crappy ass group will inspire a new wave of music. Is any one else tired of The Killers yet?
I would love to see more talent exposed for people just to enjoy the sounds that are out there. Forget image and videos and money for just a second. (yes I know that is totally unrealistic) and see what you can find. The independent scene isn't just half starved white kids a la Sonic Youth but it's a large group of musicians cranking out amazing stuff from all genres. There are so many small record labels to explore. Sub pop records being amongst my favourites. Check out www.pitchforkmedia.com as well. It can be totally pretentious and ostentatious but it's worth it just to see what's out there. Although, thanks to the O.C. my favourite type of music may just become the next 'cool' thing...blah, So freaking subjective.

Sonic Youth still plays? Can they really still be called Youth? I'm sure they are older then me and nobodies going to be calling me a youth. If they do, I'll chase them off with my shotgun. Stay off the lawn!!!

i'm clueless when it comes to music. I rarely buy cd's of any sort and am still listening to almost the exact same music of when I was 14...Green Day all the way. I added Cake and Phill Collins to that list, but Seals still on there. lol
