I realized today that I have spent more time being silent then I do anything else. Just a few short months ago I had to be talking all the time.
Now I am like a Benedictine monk who has taken a vow of silence. Not that I mind it. But I do miss the exchange of ideas amongst people, no matter how inane they were. Which was probably 75% of the time. ( thanks Scott.)
I was asked once by my significant other why I couldn't be quick and witty with him like I could with another male friend. I felt bad because I had to explain that it wasn't his style. He wasn't quick with words. Vocabulary and wit weren't his gifts in life. Which started me thinking. How important is it to be entertained by the ones you love? or more simply enjoy the art of conversation with them?
I once dated a guy who was incredibly witty, and intelligent, but he lacked soul. I've noticed I tend to go for down to earth simpler types. The problem with that is I get frusterated by how they tend to forget that life is a complex venture. Where is that balance? What exactley should one sacrifice to be happy?
I realize it isn't exclusively about how much can this person make me laugh. But how much silence should there be in a relationship? I enjoy comfortable silences, but not the ones were you have nothing to talk about. Either because you don't care to know what the other person thinks or you simply don't have that much in common to discuss.
It's a hard balance to strike. One I'm still trying to even out.

Another question I find myself mulling over is the validity of a promise. A promise doesn't mean much to me these days. It has been used and abused by marketig ploys and mistreated by those I love. When someone just says 'I promise' they have to follow it up with action because words mean squat to me. I guess just the use of words without actions is hallow to me. Words are cheap. Actions costs more.
Speaking of which I think I'm going to do some action myself and stop paying lip service to those I love around me.
